"Baby Birdies"

We have a family of woodpeckers in our backyard that has provided serious amounts of entertainment for us over the past several months. They have built their nest inside of an already dying tree outside our kitchen window. From our windows along the entire back of our house we are about eye level with their "front door".
The male started working last year on this tree, pecking away creating several holes. He returned several months ago to the same tree and we were so happy to see and hear him. After weeks of work and several days of us watching the hole grow larger and larger until he could fit entirely inside, turn around, stick just his head back out and deposit wood chips onto the ground by flicking his head back and forth, he brought his mate to see their new digs! Audrey loved to watch him with the wood chips in his mouth and would say "woodpecka make mess!" as we watched his pile on the ground beneath the tree get larger.
We hoped they would have babies and have been speculating for several weeks about when we thought we might hear or see them. We did some research online and figured it would be any day now that we might see the Mommy and Daddy bringing food back to the nest. We look for the Mommy and Daddy woodpeckers first thing in the mornings, as well as during lunch, after naps, work and while we're out in the backyard playing.
Well, yesterday evening while I was pushing Audrey in her swing I heard the sound of several woodpecker calls, but much more high pitched and muffled. If you've ever heard a woodpeckers call, it's pretty identifiable.....and no, it's not quite the woody the woodpecker sound we all know and love!:) I stopped Audrey in her swing and we both listened. Sure enough, coming from the tree was the sweet sound of baby birds! As we listened and watched, the Mommy bird came back with a pebble sized piece of food in her beak and waited on the tree while the Daddy bird came out and stood on the tree. Then, Mommy went in, fed a baby, and flew back out, surely going for more food. Daddy checked on them quickly then flew off too.
We are so excited and hope we get to see some babies! It's fun talking with Audrey about what's going on inside the tree and how big she thinks the babies are.
What an awesome learning experience for Audrey and for us!
